In July 1959, the Nigerian Naval force became a full-fledged Navy after Queen Elizabeth granted it permission to use the title ‘Royal Nigerian Navy’. In 1963, after Nigeria became a republic, that title was changed to the one in it currently holds: ‘Nigerian Navy’.
Nonetheless, even after a change in title, the name for the ranks, colour and designs of insignias, along with several other terms remained the same.
