The Nigeria Customs Service has announced the seizure of 34 containers of rice smuggled through the Tin Can Island port in Lagos. The Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali (retd), disclosed this in Lagos on Tuesday. He said one of the rice containers was concealed by its importers as spare parts. He said, in addition to the 34 containers of rice, the service intercepted 11 containers of unregistered pharmaceutical products, two containers of used tyres, one container of used clothing and four containers of refined vegetable oil in retail packs, bringing the total to 52 containers of seized contraband. Ali put the duty paid value of the seized goods at N2.7bn. He attributed the seizure to the recent closure of the land borders, which he said had prompted importers of banned items to route them through the seaports. Popular supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari on social media came hard on popular musician, David Adeleke aka Davido, for handcuffing and parading two women who had jokingly accused him of impregnating one of them. Davido’s hype man, known as Special Spesh, had posted a video on Instagram showing the two women, Helen and Susan, handcuffedand sitting on a chair in a living room. Spesh could be heard telling one of the ladies to lift up her head or get a slap in the face. Davido also shared the video, defending the action of his sidekick. However, some of Buhari’s supporters on social media reminded Davido how he attacked the President during the Osun governorship election but was never touched. They accused the musician of being a hypocrite and abuse of power. Members of a church here in Nigeria were almost moved to tears recently after a soldier who came there to testify of God's protection while serving in Maiduguri, the hotbed of Boko Haram activities, went on his knees to beg them to pray for soldiers still serving in Maiduguri, Borno state. Maiduguri has been worst hit since Boko Haram started its attacks in the North. The Nigerian soldier testified of how God saved him while he was out performing his duties in the North. He told the church members that as much as it is important to pray for prosperity, the church should also not forget to pray for soldiers in the North.

Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Monday slammed the Minister of Works and Housing, Raji Fashola, for not appearing before it to defend his budget but chose to travel. The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani, said that the panel will reject any submissions from the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Abubakar Aliyu, who was before the committee to represent Fashola. Senator Aishatu insisted that most of the replies to correspondences the Committee exchanged with the Ministry were personally signed by Fashola. The lawmaker representing Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dennis Idahosa, has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Prof. Lilian Salami as the 10th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN). Prof. Salami is the second female to be appointed VC of UNIBEN. Her appointment takes effect from December 2, 2019. She is a Professor of Home Economics/Nutritional Education. Idahosa said Prof. Salami’s appointment attested to the fact that President Buhari’s administration is gender sensitive. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said it has adopted a policy of score standardisation under which Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates cannot get zero, even if they are absent from the examination. The board explained that apart from absentee candidates, candidates who did not attempt any question or who did not get any answer correctly were also captured under the policy and would be awarded a “common scale with uniform metric.” According to JAMB, the score standardisation policy means that all candidates, who are registered for a paper, will be awarded a score for that paper, and there would be no zero score. The board stated this in a paper presented by its Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, according to the JAMB weekly bulletin obtained by our correspondent on Monday. UNIBEN appoint second female VC.

Lilian Salami, a professor, has been appointed the 10th substantive vice-chancellor of the University of Benin, Edo State. A home economist and former Dean of the Faculty of Education, Mrs Salami becomes the second female vice-chancellor of the institution after Grace Alele Williams, who was also the first female vice-chancellor in Nigeria. Mrs Salami will take over from the outgoing vice-chancellor, Faraday Orumwense, whose tenure will end November 30. The appointment of the new vice-chancellor, which takes effect from December 2, was made by the Governing Council of the University. President Bihari threatens to evacuate contractors from any state that disturb them in FG project work

Buhari says it will be unfair to accuse Federal Government of  marginalising people in terms of projects allocation when local authorities in some states are frustrating contractors. President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a serious warning to state governments that create unnecessary impediment in the allocation of land for projects or refuse to cooperate with contractors.  The President gave the warning on Saturday, October 19, 2019 in a statement issued by his media aide, Garba Shehu. Buhari leaves for summit in Russia The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, yesterday said the Federal Government’s request for a $3 billion World Bank loan to finance the power sector was at the verge of being granted. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted her making the disclosure at a media briefing on activities of the Nigerian delegation to the just-concluded World Bank/International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington.
